It's not too late to take part!
The inaugural celebration of "Make Music New York" is quickly approaching, and the high level of enthusiasm and grassroots support for the event is due to people like you: New York-based artists willing to donate time and showcase their work.
For this year's festival, the response from the New York artistic community has been overwhelming. Over 1,400 musicians have contacted us in the past 6 months, asking how they could take part. We feel that this is an indication that we're on the right track, and that Make Music New York is poised to become even bigger next year.
Unfortunately, for this first year, we were unable to find a space for everyone that expressed an interest in participating. If you are not currently listed on timeoutnewyork.com/makemusic, or working with one of our neighborhood partners, it is no longer possible to include your performance in our listings or secure your sound permits.
But don't let that stop you!
Although we are unable to formally include you, you can always make your own arrangements for the day and still perform as part of Make Music New York. For example, some artists who are unlisted, or who have been denied sound permits by the local precinct, have made arrangements with cafe owners, laundry mats, and other retail stores to allow them to perform inside on June 21st.
Furthermore, we have been advised by the City that ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCES ON THE SIDEWALK DO NOT REQUIRE A PERMIT. If you don't use electricity, no one else has taken the spot, and you're not blocking pedestrians, you can just come out and play!
Hip-hop performers are also invited to come up on stage from 4pm - 8pm at the East River Park Amphitheatre (Click here for directions) for a "no-holds-barred open-mic showcase" hosted by Collective Flow. Bring your friends and show off your skills!
Even if you're not listed, you can still use our free posters to promote your concert. Pick up posters at 305 Seventh Ave. (at W. 27th St) any day from 10am to 10pm, or look for copies in amNewYork on June 20th.
